I started with an Eddie Finn tenor I got for about 60 bucks. Hold a tune, sounds pretty good, and easy to start out since there's more space than a concert or soprano. There's tons of videos and sites that have great tutorials. You can be playing some simple stuff in a day or two and it actually sounds like songs!
If you want a more traditional "plinky" sound get a soprano. You might even be able to find one with a soprano size body and concert scale length if you wanted. Kinda best of both scenario there. There is a big difference in how they sound. The soprano is relatively high pitched (the classic Uke sound), the Concert sounds a bit more relaxed.
